Scholarships with Service Obligations

National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

The NHSC offers a competitive scholarship program designed for students committed to providing primary health care in communities of greatest need. Scholarship recipients serve where they are most needed upon completion of their training. The program offers the following benefits for up to 4 years of education:

  • Payment of tuition and fees
  • Twelve monthly stipend payments per year of scholarship support
  • Payment of other reasonable educational expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment

Prospective applicants should note that acceptance of funds through this program incurs a service obligation. Recipients must commit to work at least 2 years at an NHSC-approved site in a medically underserved community. For each year of financial support (up to four years), the student agrees to serve one year (minimum two years) at an NHSC-approved site in a high-need urban, rural, or frontier community across the nation.

Applications are currently closed. The next Scholarship Program application is scheduled to open in early 2018. Sign up⤷ to get an email when it does.

Indian Health Service Health Professions Scholarship Program

The Health Professions Scholarship Program is for American Indian and Alaska Native students, who are members of their Tribe (federally recognized only), enrolled in health professions and allied health professions programs. Priority is given to graduate students and junior- and senior-level students unless otherwise specified. The scholarship pays for full tuition and fees at the recipient’s institution as well as stipend support. Recipients also receive a one-time payment for educational expenses such as books, equipment, etc.

Prospective applicants should note that acceptance of funds through this program incurs a service obligation. Recipients must fulfill a minimum two-year service commitment at an Indian health facility after graduation. Recipients who fail to complete their academic program and/or fulfill the service obligation must repay funds received through the program.

Applications are currently closed. Applications typically open in January each year.
