The University of Florida College of Dentistry offers a 30-month residency program involving academic course work, intense clinical training, and basic research experience, starting July 1, conferring eligibility to challenge the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology diplomate examination. Up to four residents will be accepted each year. Eligible applicants must hold a DDS or DMD degree from an accredited dental college in the US or its equivalent from foreign institutions. TOEFL is required at the time of application.
The OMFR program provides comprehensive training in clinical skills, teaching and research. The program will also prepare students for the board examination by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. The program prepares graduates for a career in academia or private practice. UF does not offer a Master’s or PhD in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. It is possible to combine Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology training with a PhD in Oral Biology. Contact the Department of Oral Biology for information on the PhD program.
A diverse clinical education is provided by board-certified maxillofacial radiologists, and additional full-time medical radiologists, with rotations in neuroradiology/head and neck radiology, nulear medicine and Emergency Room service. Clinical experience includes protocoling, acquiring and reading conventional and advanced imaging studies including Cone Beam CTs, as well as interpretation of MDCT, MRI, nuclear medicine studies, and ultrasound. Residents will attend the Otolaryngology multi-disciplinary conference on a weekly basis. Residents choose a research topic and conduct research under the guidance of OMFR faculty, presenting their research at national meetings of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Radiologic Society of North America, American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, and/or Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine. Research must be published in peer- reviewed journals.
There is no tuition or fees for US/Canada-trained residents with a DDS/DMD, as they qualify for Graduate Medical Education (GME) funding, contingent upon continued support through the GME program. An annual stipend is available per GME resident.
All internationally trained residents are eligible for $1000/ year in stipendiary support but will be responsible for tuition and fees (approximately $50,000 per year for the program at this time).
The program participates in PASS (Post-doctoral Application Support Service).
