This 24- month Advanced Education Program is designed to prepare dentists for the diverse specialty practice of Pediatric Dentistry and to qualify them for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Didactic instruction and clinical training develop skills necessary to comprehensive care for the dental needs of both the healthy child and the child with special healthcare needs.
The program is based at the College of Dentistry and Shands Hospital in Gainesville. The didactic curriculum includes courses on Growth and Development, Pediatric Dental Medicine, Practice Management, Sedation, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology, Radiology, Head and Neck Anatomy, and Biostatistics. Residents also participate in Literature Review Seminars, Multidisciplinary Grand Rounds, and Special Topics presentations.
The clinical curriculum includes experience in comprehensive preventive and restorative care, hospital-based dentistry both in an operating room setting and management of in-patient care, sedation and monitoring in the office setting, treatment of patients with oral and craniofacial anomalies, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusion, and emergency dental care. Consultation and dental care are provided to patients referred from Pediatric Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, and from the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. Residents also participate in a four-week rotation in anesthesiology. Second year residents are exposed to clinical teaching of DMD students. Completion of a research project is a requirement.
A stipend is available. No tuition is required.
Application is through PASS. This program participates in the MATCH.
