This 24- month Advanced Education Program is designed to prepare dentists for the diverse specialty practice of Pediatric Dentistry and to qualify them for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Didactic instruction and clinical training develop skills necessary to comprehensive care for the dental needs of both the healthy child and the child with special healthcare needs.
The residency program is based in Naples, FL and provides care to an underserved community in one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. As a Center for Excellence in Pediatric Dentistry, this program includes a state-of-the-art facility and an innovative community outreach with a public health and preventive orientation.
Using distance-learning technology and local resources, the didactic curriculum includes courses on Growth and Development, Pediatric Dental Medicine, Practice Management, Sedation, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology, Radiology, Head and Neck Anatomy, and Biostatistics. Residents also participate in Literature Review Seminars, Multidisciplinary Grand Rounds, and Special Topics presentations.
The clinical curriculum includes experience in comprehensive preventive and restorative care, hospital- based dental care in an operating room setting, oral and IV sedation in the office setting, treatment of patients with oral and craniofacial anomalies, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusion, and emergency dental care. Residents participate in a four-week rotation in anesthesiology at Miami Children’s Hospital. Completion of a research project is a requirement.
A stipend is available. No tuition is required.
Application is through PASS. This program participates in the MATCH.
