The goal of this program is to develop periodontists who desire to enter clinical practice or an academic career in the specialty. The program’s objective is to instill the following qualities in the students:
- A thorough foundation in evaluating therapeutic techniques and provide a current knowledge base about diseases of the periodontium and their treatment.
- A sound knowledge of basic science appropriate to the specialty and an appreciation of research and its application to periodontology.
- Demonstrated ability for the comprehensive management of all types of periodontal disease and deficiencies.
- The ability to integrate periodontal care with other dental care through cooperation with generalists and other specialists.
Qualified applicants are accepted for a 36-month program which leads to a Certificate in Periodontics and a Master of Science in Dental Sciences with specialization in periodontics. The expectation is that all residents will complete the American Board of Periodontology process. The program fulfills guidelines set forth by the Council on Dental Education and the American Academy of Periodontology. Academically-oriented students may elect to pursue a Ph.D. degree either concurrent with the certificate program or subsequently.
The didactic curriculum consists of a basic science core provided by the Oral Biology Department. Frequent case presentations, treatment planning seminars, and literature reviews are utilized to provide past, current and state-of-the-art instruction in the specialty.
Clinical activities center are supported by both full-time and courtesy faculty from the private practice sector. Students provide direct periodontal patient care, including conscious sedation and site preparation for and the placement of dental implants.
Teaching and research activities are designed according to the individual interests of each student. Research projects involve either a clinical or basic science focus, depending on the background of the various mentors.
A stipend is available. Tuition is required.
