This 13-month Advanced Education Program is designed to prepare internationally-educated pediatric dentists for the diverse specialty practice of Pediatric Dentistry in the US and to qualify them for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Didactic instruction and clinical training will be provided to help develop skills necessary to comprehensively care for the dental needs of both the healthy child and the child with special healthcare needs.
The program is based at the College of Dentistry and Shands Hospital in Gainesville. The didactic curriculum includes courses on Growth and Development, Oral Medicine, Practice Management, Sedation, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology, Radiology, Head and Neck Anatomy, and Research Design. Residents will also participate in Literature Review Seminars, Multidisciplinary Grand Rounds Seminars as well as Special Topics presentations.
The clinical curriculum includes experience in comprehensive preventive and restorative care, hospital-based dentistry both in an operating room setting and management of in-patient care, sedation and monitoring in the office setting, treatment of patients with dental and craniofacial anomalies, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusion, and emergency dental care. Consultation and dental care are routinely provided to patients referred from Pediatric Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, and from the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. Furthermore residents will participate in a four-week rotation in anesthesiology and exposure to clinical teaching of DMD students.
A stipend is in the amount of $1,000 is provided. There is a required yearly tuition of $50,000.
