The goal of this program is to develop Periodontists who desire to enter clinical practice or an academic career in Periodontics. Graduates of this program will develop the ability to:

  1. Apply scientific-based therapeutic techniques to treat diseases of the periodontium.
  2. Manage all types and degrees of periodontal disease, mucogingival deformities, and inter-disciplinary therapies.
  3. Perform esthetic surgeries to correct soft tissue deficiencies.
  4. Manage alveolar defects with the latest techniques of hard and soft tissue grafting.
  5. Place and restore dental implants.
  6. Appreciate and conduct research in Periodontology.

This is a 36-month program which leads to a Certificate in Periodontics and a Master of Science in Dental Sciences with specialization in Periodontics. The program fulfills guidelines set forth by the Council on Dental Education and the American Academy of Periodontology.

Academically oriented students may elect to pursue a Ph.D. degree either concurrent with the certificate program or subsequently. At this time, UF does not offer a Ph.D. in Periodontics.

A stipend is available. Tuition is required.

All international students must secure an F1 visa prior to matriculation on July 1.

Application Process

Sunday, August 1, 2021 is the deadline to apply to this program.

We strongly encourage all applicants to have complete applications on file with PASS and UFCD prior to the deadline.

1. Apply to PASS

All program applicants must apply through PASS (Postdoctoral Application Support Service), which is sponsored by the American Association of Dental Schools (⤷). PASS is an application clearinghouse that provides uniform information to participating programs while relieving applicants of the burden of completing multiple individual applications. The PASS website opens for application in late spring/early summer. Participation in the PASS program is mandatory. We advise applicants to apply as early as possible.

2. Register for the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program

All program applicants must register with the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program⤷.

3. Apply directly to the University of Florida Graduate School

Complete the Graduate Application⤷.

  • Select the “Graduate” option (do NOT select “Professional”).
  • Mark “Masters” and “Summer B 2022″ for the term.
  • The UF Graduate Application requires a non-refundable fee of up to $37. Instructions about how to submit payment are included at the end of the application. DO NOT mail any payments to our office.
  • Once you have submitted your payment, you will be given an 8-digit UFID number.
  • After you submit your PASS Application, you may email ( your UFID to our office to reduce processing time.

Note: You do not need to make copies or mail or email the UF Graduate Application to our office.

4. Submit the following materials to UF College of Dentistry

All supplemental application materials (such as NBDE, transcripts from all institutions attended) should be included with the PASS application when possible.  Application materials that are not included with your PASS application should be emailed to GradAdmissions@dental.ufl.eduAt this time, no materials should be mailed to our office.

  • Undergraduate school transcripts (from all undergraduate institutions attended)
    • Unofficial undergraduate transcripts are sufficient at time of application.
      Original official undergraduate transcripts in an envelope sealed by the institution are required for matriculation.
  • National Boards Part I and II or Integrated National Board Dental Examination score report
    • An unofficial NBDE or INBDE score report is sufficient at time of application.
      An official NBDE or INBDE score report is required for matriculation. (Official electronic NBDE or INBDE score reports must be sent to

  • Digital Photo
    • Email your photograph to the admissions office. Send the file in JPEG format and make sure your photo is not smaller than 400 x 400 pixels and not larger than 1200 x 1200 pixels. Photos should show you from the shoulders up, directly facing the camera. See examples of correct and incorrect photos
  • Additional Requirement for applicants from Puerto Rico: Official TOEFL Scores
    • Applicants who attended dental school in Puerto Rico are required to submit Official TOEFL scores.
      A minimum TOEFL score of 80 (Internet-Based version) or 550 (paper-based) is required.
      The UF College of Dentistry code is 8612.
      Please note that TOEFL scores expire after 2 years. For the 2022 Application Cycle, TOEFL scores must be dated February 8, 2020 or later.
      For the TOEFL, scores must be from the same test date (the “MyBest Scores” are not accepted or considered).
      The TOEFL ITP is not accepted for admission purposes.
  • No ADAT required

5. Additional Requirements for Internationally-Educated Dentists

In addition to completing the application requirements listed above, Internationally-Educated Dentists are required to submit additional documentation in order to be eligible for admission. Click here to review the list of additional requirements.

Application Status Updates

  • The Office of Admissions will work hard to process your complete PASS application in a timely manner. Please be aware that it can take up to four weeks.
  • Within two weeks of receiving your complete PASS application, the Office of Admissions will send you a confirmation via email.
  • After processing your complete PASS application, which can take an additional two weeks, the Office of Admissions will send you an email outlining your current application status and any remaining actions you need to take in order to complete your application.
  • Complete applications will be forwarded to the program director on a rolling basis.
  • Applicants with incomplete applications will not be eligible for admission.

Interview Procedure

  • Selected candidates are required to participate in an interview at the College of Dentistry in Gainesville, Florida.
  • Interviews for the Periodontics Program will be held during the month of August.

For matriculation, the following documents must be on file with the University of Florida College of Dentistry Office of Admissions:

  • Official electronic NBDE score reports sent to
